3. A midwife gave me this tip. When it gets really hot and sticky, jump in a tepid bath and breastfeed. It will help cool you and a hot and cranky baby to settle too. Great if you don't have air-con!

2. Fans or airconditioning - It's hard to keep cool with a little heat pack pressed up against your body, so make sure you are somewhere cool before you feed!

I really don't know if anyone knows if it helps asthma or not but I have been down the guilt road as well from the mixed media messages.
Our daughter was breastfed for 12 months and as she was 11 weeks prem that meant being a big breast pump cow for a long time. Our son was only breastfed for 3 months (full term bub) and he has asthma (diagnosed at 9 months). I refuse however to be pressured into feeling guilty about a decision that had to be made at the time that may or may not have affected my son's health.
As mothers we do what is best for us at the time the decision needs to be made and if it is best for us then it is best for our babies. It is a shame that there are so many mixed messages out there.

Yes have to agree with you Candice. All we seem to get today from the media is mixed messages! There's always something new to add to the list for the guilt...

Thanks for sharing your story. I hope the blocked ducts settle down for you soon! I found applying heat before a feed and cold afterwards really seemed to help. I also tried to massage out any lumps while I was in a hot shower.

What I find really frustrating is the contradiction between all these studies that the media keep making a big deal of that say breastfeeding doesn't help this and that, but on the flip side it is a must to breastfeed. Confuses all involved I say!

Great find with the article though Kel!

I am almost 4 months into breastfeeding my first child. I needed a transfusion after delivery and was in bed rest for a week so they worried i wasnt getting my milk in properly so they put me on Motilliumm, and expressing and comping with Formula - they were wrong! I had an absolute oversupply of milk with major engorgement problems just starting to settle down. I am still struggling with an ongoing problem with blocked ducts and avoiding mastitis. My goal was for 6 months, but i love the bonding experience and it should only get easier as time goes on so would like to go to 12 months (as long as i can tame these blockages as they are quite stressful).

That's so wrong.
Everyone knows it's only Guinness (because of all the iron it contains). Not just any old beer.

*giggle*

Another thing to make Mums feel guilty, is my opinion.

Tip 17 - Set up a feeding station

To make things easier, set up a little breastfeeding station around your favourite comfy chair or bed. Have everything you need next you on a little table or stool. Have a glass of water, chuck towel, remote control and everything else you need so you don't have to worry about moving. Then you can relax as much as possible.
